I have been documenting the social changes that have been transpiring during Corona - like the new behaviors regarding masks. In this post I want to look at how traveling is affected.
Of course this will be very different depending on where you are traveling to and what country your point of origin is, and also when your are traveling (as regulations and restrictions are constantly changing); so this is just a brief look at how things currently are in some parts in France as there are are also some great regional variations.
In fact it was just announced that masks would have to be worn in some coastal regions as well as perhaps Paris. These new restrictions come in light of a rise in new corona cases (but might also be partly the result of more tests that are being carried out). It seems that there is a race with time to stay ahead with new restrictions that would wholly upend traveling. And no doubt this uncertainty has caused many people to stay rather close to their homes.
Nevertheless, I decided to go on a vacation this summer even when there is a chance of having to end it prematurely. I traveled from Germany to the Atlantic coast near Bordeaux where it is very beautiful, having long sandy coasts here with pine tree forests and a mild climate.
So how is the situation here? It goes without saying from looking at the pictures that it is crowded like every year here, and there are many tourists from different countries (but mainly from Germany). Officially the regulations are very similar to Germany, yet they are followed less strictly here. People still put on masks in shops or restaurants, but in the line I encountered only some who actually wore them.
You can also see that social distancing is not being followed very well and is perhaps the most obvious restriction that is often being disregarded. In fact there does not really seem to be a difference to other years and makes one easily forget the corona issue which is pursued so heavily in the media. I definitely have to admit that his is actually very relaxing. But of course that feeling could be misplaced if cases start to rise again.
And yet countries like Sweden (is it the only one?) have shown that these preventive measures might not work so well as many proponents of these measures would like to portray. I think that the evidence for either side is still unclear which is not a good thing: if it was obvious we wouldn't have to debate this issue and could start to save lives or jobs...
What are your experiences when it comes to traveling during corona times? Did you go on vacation or did you play it safe and stay close to home?
