I have a few favourite temples where I often go for my quiet walk and meditation in the main hall. The old temples used to have lots of trees and undeveloped space in the old days. But nowadays, more new buildings have been built to accommodate the increasing number of monks and novices. Buddhist temples have been the first source of free education and free lodging for poor people and their sons in the countryside since ancient time. Formal schools and education system are quite new in Thailand, the oldest university is only about one hundred years old.
Nowadays tempkes in big cities have more money and modern resources for comfortable lodging and good quality food including financial support. So, more people from the countryside would become ordained as monks in temples on big cities. These monks and novices would have free education, two meals a day and free lodging with occasional donation money from merit-makers. In some big temples, the increasing number of monks and novices made it necessary to cut down trees for buildings construction. So, it’s rather sad that most temples in big cities have more buildings than old trees.
The concentration of wealth, the best educational resources and opportunities for successful career are centered in big cities. So, some old temples in the countryside do not have enough monks or novices to upkeep these temples. Lots of old temples have become dilapidated and deserted. These are the anomaly of present situation in the management of monk educational system.
However these are old problems with lots of complexity and complications which will take years to be reformed. According to the scripture, Buddhism would last only 5,000 years. We have less than 2,500 years left before something catastrophic taking place on earth. We are on the declining curve of deterioration towards some kind of apocalyptic events. From now on, things are supposed to get worse and worse each year with more people dying. It was said only one-third of world population would survive and these would rebuild society one more time. So, I am quite grateful and content to be walking among some old trees in my two favorite temples in Bangkok. I should count my blessings and enjoy precious moments everyday as time is running short!
เราชอบไปเดินเล่นเงียบๆ และไปนั่งสมาธิที่วัดโปรดของเราสองแห่งในกรุงเทพฯ สมัยก่อนวัดเก่าๆแบบนี้มีต้นไม้สูงใหญ่มากมาย แต่ตวามเจริญของสังคมเมืองทำให้วัดต้องมีสิ่งปลูกสร้างมากขึ้น ต้นไม้เก่าๆก็ถูกตัดเพื่อสร้างตึกใหม่ คนจนจำนวนมากต้องอาศัยวัดเป็นที่พึ่ง การบวชเป็นพระหรือเณรก็เป็นทางออกของชีวิต ทำให้มีการศึกษาและมีความรู้ในการประทังชีวิตหากจะสึกออกไปดำรงชีพ แต่คนส่วนใหญ่อยากไปบวชตามวัดที่อยู่ในเมืองใหญ่ เพราะมีกำลังทรัพย์และสถานที่รองรับพระจำนวนมากๆได้ ทำให้วัดในต่างจังหวัดไกลๆ กลายเป็นวัดร้างหรือแทบจะไม่มีพระจำพรรษาและเป็นที่พึ่งของชาวบ้านด้านพืธีทางศาสนา
เราก็คิดว่าโชคดีที่ยังมีวัดเก่าแก่บางวัดในกรุงเทพที่ ยังมีต้นไม้ใหญ่ให้เราได้ดูบ้าง นี่ชาวพุทธก็เหลือเวลาอีกไม่ถึง 2,500 ปี ก่อนที่ศาสนาพุทธจะหายไปจากโลกตามที่เขียนอยู่ในพุทธทำนาย ยุคนี้เขาเรียกว่ากลียุค คือคนชั่วจะได้ดีคนดีต้องหลบหลีกและเก็บตัว เพราะคนพาลจะเป็นใหญ่เป็นโต ทุกอย่างในสังคมจะกลับตาลปัด และความเสื่อมทางสังคมจะแย่ลงเรื่อยไป อากาศและฤดูกาลก็จะปั่นป่วน คนจะตายกันเป็นจำนวนมากด้วยโรคแปลกๆ คนจะตายไปกว่าค่อนครึ่งโลก คนที่จะแคล้วคลาดภัยอันตรายต่างๆได้ก็เป็นคน ที่มีธรรมและเป็นคนดีมากจริงๆ เราก็กลัวเหมือนกันว่า ชีวิตตั้งแต่นี้ไป คงจะลำบากมากขึ้นและมีความไม่แน่นอนมากขึ้น เราคงต้องรอไปอีกหลายพันปีกว่าจะถึงยุคพระศรีอารย์ ที่จะเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าองค์ที่ห้า หรือองค์สุดท้ายก่อนที่โลกจะแปรเปลี่ยนสภาพไปในจักรวาล
