I heard him talk about a massive budget increase to our military which I thought was good. This was a good way to start the speech because it shows strength in a time when it seems like conflict is everywhere. I also liked the bit on immigration reform not only for us but for other countries as well. You would have to be a monster to not see the need to help refugees in their time of need but he does make a good point. We should be helping them in their own countries as opposed to importing them into a welfare state.
He also addressed the current state of the UN and how everyone needs to be paying their own share. America is taking up most of the financial burden and this is something that needs to change. The American tax-payer shouldn't shoulder the burden for countries that have become failed states. It's just to much to take on and it would cost less to build up those in need like Venezuela.
His America first agenda resonated well with the assembly as they applauded. He spoke of sovereignty and how nations should become nation states once again. Reminding everyone of the UN's purpose and giving them direction he addressed the delegation of leaders with a command of the room. His presence was indeed presidential and after he was slammed at the Emmy awards ceremony not that long ago, his delivery came at the right time. The quip about Kim Jong-un calling him "Rocket Man" was the cherry on top as well.
