Emily in Paris is a candy to watch when you want to simply not think about anything. You can hear your brain cells die when you watch this show. The show was created by Darren Star, the creator of Sex and the City, but this show is not about an interesting group of women and their lives. It's not really interesting. It's just silly entertainment that makes you wonder why you are even watching this. Probably because it is popular on Netflix and each episode is under 30 minutes, so it won’t take much of your time.
Emily in Paris follows young Emily Cooper played by Lily Collins. She gets sent to work in a fancy French marketing firm, while not knowing French. I mean, someone else who knows everything about France and knows how to speak French was supposed to go, but apparently pregnancy means that your life is now over. I know that French people were really angry about this show, but all of the French people I met in real life were rude and refused to speak English no matter what. And English is not the official language where I live, I just made the effort to study. So I'm not impressed with their anger. But boy do they come out stupid, horny, lazy and old fashioned in this show. I mean her boss is super mean, her colleagues are terrible and disrespectable and everyone wants to stop her from doing the job which she was hired to do. They don't like her American point of view and behavior, things which she, well, her predecessor were hired for. This is mostly uninteresting, like this show and its main character.
Emily is an Instagram girl, an influencer. She has an Instagram account "Emily in Paris" which has a lot of followers and to which she uploads all of her experiences from Paris. If you want a critical view of Instagram, it's not here. This show celebrates it and makes it look like the ultimate marketing tool. I mean Emily's ideas hardly leave the realm of the internet. Emily is a happy perky girl, too happy and boring. If she didn't screw up so much she would be totally boring. But she does make unreasonable mistakes. Lily Collins does her best with this bland character and manages to put some life into her and her personal spark.
She also quickly breaks up with her boyfriend and get into many relationships with many men at the same time. Stupidly. I mean she gets herself into unbelievably unrealistic silly situation with men. These are gorgeous actors and you can wash your wash your eyes for sure. But if you wanted to look at realistic relationship problems, you won't find them here.
The best part of this show is Paris. I mean this show shows all the beauty this city has to offer. From the famous places, to less known places. It looks stunning. Plus there are some beautiful outfits here to spice up said amazing looking places. Whoever styled this show did a really good job.
The show is ridicules. Nothing here is even slightly realistic. From the relationships to the friendships to the feels that all of Paris is just a small town. But it did make me laugh and smile a few times and I did finish the show, so it has a few redeeming qualities. If you want to watch fun nonsense to escape reality this is the show for you. There is no summery of the plot, because there is no plot. The show is just is. Pleasant entertainment that will help you forget that we are living in a COVID world and imagine that somewhere else someone is dealing with silly and amusing problems.
