Well, I can't say that it escalated quickly because the previous episode was also one hell of an escalation towards the end, but this is some other level of crazy. This episode was so awesome that it feels like it contained the plot of an entire season in one episode, but I'm glad that they didn't spend too much time on it. It would have made everything too slow is it dragged for an entire season. But as one episode, it was one hell of a ride.
The actors on this show are something special. Jonathan Majors is still a major standout. I hope he gets more work even outside of his new role in the MCU. Although Atticus Freeman is the main character of the show, so it makes sense that he stands out. Jurnee Smollett is good as Leti, but her character doesn't get much to do in this episode. Courtney B. Vance as Uncle George has a really special role in this episode. He gets a lot of time to shine and a great plotline. One that will leave you shocked.
There are a lot of Lovecraft references in this episode, but not too much. I think you will do just fine if you never heard of the Necronomicon, even though it is a really cool reference. Knowing the general vibe of his writing is enough. You'll get them.
I mean this episode is insane. There are some really crazy stuff going on here. Plus, it really helps to show how Lovecraft influenced so many creators and creations. A Song of Ice and Fire (the book series Game of Thrones is based on) was one of the main things that crossed my mind.
I have to admit that it is odd that this episode has such a closed ending. It feels like this plot can't continue. It's odd. But maybe it is a problem of the week or two weeks kind of show.
Either way I am super looking forward to the next episode.
