This episode is a flashback episode. I am not sure how important it is to the general plot of the show, but it was a really good and crazy episode. I mean wow.
The episode doesn't even follow any of the characters that we usually do. The episode takes place in the 1950 in Korea and follows Ji-Ah (played by Jamie Chung who played Blink in The Gifted). Ji-Ah is a military nurse and she is a very strange woman. Her mother treats her in a cold unmotherly fashion and her only friend is another nurse in the hospital. Pretty soon we find out her story and it is a horrific one. I mean damn. Sure, this is a bit far from the original myth, but impressive nonetheless to Western viewers at least. Not sure what people who know the myths will think about this episode. I found it horrifically perfect. Also, as usual, the human horror is also very horrific as humans give monsters a run for their money.
After a tragic turn of events with Ji-Ah that involves Atticus (Jonathan Majors), they meet at the hospital again. He is injured and his glasses are broken and he asks her to read to him his father's favorite book: The Count of Monte Cristo. Not sure if their jokes about movie adaptation and how they are different they are from the original books refers to this show as well. I still didn't read Lovecraft Country. Slowly Ji-Ah and Atticus grow closer and Ji-Ah's secret starts to take a toll on her.
Also, the end of this episode does link back to the show itself despite the fact that it is set in the past. I'm just not sure what it means and how it will actually have an effect on the show itself. But it was a pretty brilliant episode regardless. Great atmosphere, great acting, great horror, just the nudity was unnecessary in my opinion. The show can do without it, but I guess nudity makes it more edgy in some people's minds I think. It is still a great episode and I can't wait to see where the show will go next. I don't even care about the plot since the characters are so good and the horror is terrific.
