Well, this episode was brilliant, crazy and unique. You have to hand it to this show, it is one of the most original shows out there. I mean I have no idea what I just saw, but I have never seen anything like it.
I thought that it will be an episode that focuses on the mysteries of the show. However, this is another episode that explores a single character rather than move the plot forward. We see for a short time the different characters. Atticus (Jonathan Majors) goes to his mother's cousin to see if he could find any information about the book of names there. Leti (Jurnee Smollett) stays back as she wants to patch things up with her sister Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku). Yeah the same Ruby who is now in league with Christina (Abbey Lee). Leti and Ruby don't know that they are on the opposite sides in the future argument or fight to come. An interesting conflict is on the horizon.
However, these are all secondary characters, the episode focuses on Hippolyta Freeman (Aunjanue Ellis). Uncle George's dead wife. For a while she has been suspecting that something wasn't right about the story of George's death and she and Dee head off to Ardham. Not the best of moves, but they both survive and find proof that George was there. Hippolyta also has the orrery which everyone are so vehemently looking for. She's super smart and she figures everything out and finds herself on one of the most bizarre adventures I've ever seen. Leti and Atticus discover where she is headed and Atticus goes to save her. On her adventure Hippolyta basically lives up to her name in this episode. Hippolyta is a warrior princess of the Amazons so yeah, it is a pretty cool name. There is also a cool emphasis on names in this episode that works really well with this theme. Despite all of the strange things that go on in this episode, we basically learn about Hippolyta inner world.
The adventure that Hippolyta goes on left me speechless. I had no idea what I was looking at. It was totally totally crazy. And original. I am not sure that it makes sense, but at this point, I don’t think that I need it to make sense. It is so cool that it stands on its own. Although at times it did give me Mars Attacks! vibes. So you can take that as you want it. But in the end, the most important message of this episode is about self-identity and family. It was pretty touching.
It was a pretty brilliant episode all in all. I can't wait for the next one.
