Marvel is back. Put on your party hats and get ready because this is totally bunkers! I mean, I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but this is not it. This is a different party, and I appreciate the difference. It's not the Marvel formula and I love what I see.
The two episodes that were released are two episodes of silly 50s and 60s sitcom. I mean each episode has a really silly plot of dilemma in it. The kind that once upon a time were considered amusing. Each episode is just under 30 minutes, and the homage to the The Dick Van Dyke Show and to Bewitched are pretty obvious. From the way the lines are delivered, to the set design to the characters design, it is all a homage to the sitcoms of the past. But, it is not all sitcomy. This is a Marvel show. You better keep both eyes open while watching this show. There are so many hints as to what is actually going on that my head is about to explode with information and excitement. Don't let the silliness distract you.
WandaVision brings back Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany is back as Vision. Together they live a happy married couple life in a small town in the suburbs. They also have their nosy neighbor Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) stopping by constantly. Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) also lives in this small town with a different name. Yes, she's the little girl from Captain Marvel who is played by a different grown up actress, but she's still the same character. Sort of. The first episode takes place in the 50s I think and the second one in the 60s. However, there is nothing usual about this usual life.
Now, be warned, this show just throws you in. there is no explanation to how this came to be. How are they inside a television show, or just a television? You just start with them inside a sitcom in the 50s. Wanda and Vision are mostly enjoying it. And I enjoyed watching them. We know that they were a couple for two years between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but we never saw it. Now we get to really experience them as a couple. They are trying to fit in and just be a sexy newlywed couple, and it works. She tries to be a stay at home wife, and he has an office job. They have a nice life. They are Wanda and Vision, thrown into this town and life with no memory of their past lives, but they do have their powers. I get why Wanda wants to stay in this crazy fakeness, it is comforting and loving. She has her husband with her and everyone around her is mostly nice. It's a fake perfect life and it seems she has some measure of control over them.
But this is Marvel and it is not a sitcom. It is madness. We get all sorts of hints about what is really going on, and most sadly, that Wanda wants to stay. But bad things are coming and as we have been expecting from this show. I am not sure that this is a small house of M story, but yeah, I think Wanda is already crazy, and about to become crazy bad. Watch for the signs even between the lines and the choices of words that characters are using. This is a mystery and it is brewing.
I just want to add that this show looks fantastic. I love it. Even the cute opening song that changes from episode to episode. Plus those shapes in the background when the credits role, well, you better pause to see what they look like. Olsen and Bettany look great in this show. This show looks and feels great and you know what? Even though this is outdated sitcoms, I actually laughed out loud a few times. I just enjoyed it.
I loved spending time with Wanda and Vision, I understand why they will want to stay together at any price. I just love them. This show is crazy fun bunkers.
