Our culture is addicted to nostalgia. That’s a given. We love to be reminded of our youth and things we already love, and “better days.” So reboots come and go, and some leave with more money than god and we all say thank you. But recently a reboot came around that has caused more controversy than most. ROSEANNE was a hit show for over a decade about a real, blue collar family working out real problems and showing what love in a family could be, warts and all.
And then Trump. Roseanne Barr, the person, was a very vocal supporter of the polarizing candidate and has supported him since he became president. This shocked a lot of people that remember the tough-talking, no nonsense character with a little more left leaning appeal. But was she? And is this show reflective of her own personal values?
In the first episode, Roseanne and her sister are fighting because of who they each voted for. But both sides get equal representation in the argument and, while there are plenty of punchy, buzzy quips leveled at each other, there isn’t a clear agenda or perspective that seems to take priority.
So, is this show just for the right? Can liberals that love multi-cam comedy nostalgia give it a chance and have a laugh? Should they?
