Her childhood friends, Piper and Kaylena follow her through the driftwood gate into the dark backyard. Marine clouds further obscure whatever is rustling in the stand of swaying bamboo.
The rake against the chicken coop taking on the appearance of a cowboy figure, hand to mouth, leering from the shadows and the girls begin to huddle, pinch their eyes for clarity.
An animal slinks towards them.
“Oh, I think it’s just a raccoon,” pronounces Sunny.
But it’s a coyote, lips drawn up to crocodile smile, army advancing and low.
The girls scream, someone jumps the fence, lasso’s a back leg!
