Crab and coconut fish are typical of Samaná due to the influence of North American cocolos that arrived more than a hundred years ago in this area of the country.
Due to the wave of immigrants that the Southeast region has received, the customs are more varied, there is a greater African influence due to cane plantations.The arrival of free blacks, from the Lesser Antilles of England, influenced the types of food: coconut, domplin, and yaniqueque fish are some examples of the food they make.
The Arab influence is also important, especially in San Pedro de Macorís.
In the Southeast region, the use of corn in the preparation of typical dishes predominates: chenchen, majarete and arepas.
Finally, we can say that culture is one of the aspects that allows us to distinguish one country from another. This is what we have just seen in the case of the Dominican Republic especially with its gastronomy, its heritage and custom. We have seen that this country have difference between the lifestyle of people in the north and south as well as east and west.
