Four clubs were able to qualify to the semi-finals of the tournament; Milan, Bayern Munich, Marseille and Benfica.
The final game of the tournament was held in Praterstadion, Vienna, in 23 May 1990 between Milan and Benfica. The Italian club was able to win the the final game 1-0. It was the 4th European title for the Italian giants.
Jean-Pierre Papin from Marseille, and Romàrio from PSV Eindhoven were named the top goalscorers of the tournament, scoring 6 goals each one of them in the 1989-90 Champions League European Cup.
