Steyning Architecture
Steyning is a pretty Sussex town that has a bit of something for everyone - an interesting high street, historic buildings, good shops and lovely countryside nearby.
It has retained a lot of its charm because its economic development was literally left high and dry when the River Adur silted up. Steyning had been a big trading power in the early middle ages as a river port for the downland wool trade.
However, over time the river Adur silted up, the Black Death arrived and competition from other ports increased and Steyning lost it's economic edge.
The result is that Steyning is now pretty well preserved. There are still plenty of old buildings there including Tudor style half timbered houses and some smart Georgian town houses too.
Here is a detail from one such building. At one point this window must have been an outside one but it is now in an internal sort of courtyard.
