Indragiri Hilir (Inhil) Riau Police arrested the smugglers of 38 parrots. The price of king-type parrots in foreign markets reaches USD 1,351 per cockatoo.
"The evidence we received is 38 heads and one dead. The price for abroad is quite promising, it can penetrate USD 1,351 per cockatoo and the cheapest is USD 676 per cockatoo." said Head of the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) , Suharyono told reporters on Wednesday (05/09/2018).
Haryono explained, there were two types of parrot evidence. The first crested cockatoo (lukaua galerita) 34 birds alive.
Then there are 4 king cockatoos (probosciger atteremus). One cockatoo is dead.
"So, overseas cockatoos are highly desirable. The suspects secured by the Inhil police are planning to bring the birds to Batam," Haryono said.
So strong is the expectation, said Haryono, that the bird from Batam will enter the black market for sale abroad.
"So it is likely that the birds will be sold abroad. Because this type of rare bird has a lot of interest," said Haryono.
He said, this type of parrot is included in the protected species. "The birds are now in transit cages in the Riau BBKSDA," Haryono said.
The bird will be released into its habitat in eastern Indonesia.
"Endemic parrots only exist in eastern Indonesia, such as surrounding NTT and Papua," said Suharyon.
Haryono explained that the Inhil police station had named a suspect Wono Prakoso from Jember. Evidence of the bird was taken by the ASN bus that stopped in Inhil.
