In the Philippines, to get sick is not allowed.
For my mom's massive hospital bill, totaling to almost half a million Philippine pesos, with her medication expenses amounting to PHP 200k, something changed in our household. At the moment, a $10 grand will be difficult to get hold of, so we were left to make a drastic change if we don't want to spend another amount. Not that it will warrant getting the same sickness like my mom. With everyone tired and in the middle of rainy season, sniffles and simple cough can just be a precursor to something nastier.
Prevention is better than a cure, enter the ever reliable LAGUNDI
It's a common remedy since we were growing up that whenever we kids have a cough, brewing some Lagundi leaves and branches was easy as a pie. Go to the backyard and brew some. With a bit of unpleasant taste, ìt's not favored as much. But if we want to get better, drinking it was the only option.
As an adult, the taste is like a typical tea with no milk or sugar. Perhaps a little bit of honey can fix it?
Ready to be brewed.
A bit of a background about my mom, she developed a difficulty of breathing when she was unable to expectorate her nasty phlegms due to her stroke. This admission prompted intubation to easily manage her symptoms, it warranted 4 times admission to the intensive care for more than a month. Managing her right now at home, she have her own oxygen tanks, suction and nebulizer machines plus her medicines as needed.
What do science says of Lagundi?
In an article here about Lagundi:
It is generally used for the treatment of coughs, asthma symptoms, and other respiratory problems.
The same article specified the Lagundi extracts to contain bronchodilator properties, this is what asthmatic patients need when having an attack.
Inhalers, nebulizers contain bronchodilators as they dilate or widen our airways. Wheezes heard are the airways or bronchioles of our lungs getting narrower, making it difficult to breathe.
I only used 1 article so perhaps anyone wanting to know more can do further research on it.
The Lagundi brew
Knowing its' benefits, of course the adults in the house are drinking it, especially for my mom. Its' bitter taste can be remedied with a bit of honey, if not sugar. My mom being NG fed, i am giving her some in between her meals. She can't taste it so she can have more. Perhaps her immobility is making her cough on and off, plus her naso-gastric tube in-situ.
I am not so sure if there are already lagundi tablets in the market here in the Philippines as it is very much encouraged by the Department of Health. It is used in our town, straight from the tree or shrubs.
Prevention is way better than cure?
Absolument!
I am a nurse, not a doctor. Please do more research if need be. All images are mine, taken with my Samsung Galaxy S7.
