At its inception, Pelita Harapan University was temporarily located in the Lippo Bank building, Kedoya, Jakarta. Then move to Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang and occupy the Menara Asia building. Lecture activities also began on September 27, 1994, for 3 (three) faculties and 8 (eight) majors with students totaling approximately 250 students. In the same year, construction for the lecture building was underway at the UPH Tower building.

After the construction of the UPH Tower lecture building was completed, the lecture activities were moved to that location in 1995. The Pelita Harapan Education Foundation also opened the Pelita Harapan Tourism Academy this year for the Department of Hospitality Management and Tourism Business Management and the Faculty of Communication Sciences. The development was continued along with the increasing number of students and increasing departments in each of the faculties. The construction of Building D in 2004, continued with Building E in 2005, and Building C in 2006. UPH Business School was later built in 2008.
The development was even greater where Pelita Harapan University then opened an international class for every individual who planned to get a Bachelor's degree in Indonesia in 2006. Continuing with the opening of the Masters program, where classes opened in the Semanggi area, Jakarta. Pelita Harapan University then opened a branch other than in Jabodetabek, by opening the Pelita Harapan University campus in Surabaya, East Java. The programs offered are 6 (six) S1 programs and 2 (two) Masters Masters programs. Followed by the opening of Pelita Harapan University in Medan, North Sumatra in 2014. This also made Universitas Pelita Harapan the best international university in Jakarta, and even in Indonesia.
