We, Earth Rangers of the SASH-Program will beat plastic pollution.
Earth Rangers of the Steemit Action Summer Holiday Program on Thursday and Friday 27 and 28th July 2018 acquired creative skills in plastic recycling and are now set to recycle 10,000plastic bottles in the month of August 2018.
The training which was coordinated by Ngalim Franklin,
Ankiambom Louis, Thanian Shiri () and Tubuo Laura (
)
started with a brief presentation on the situation of plastic pollution in the
city of Bamenda. During this period, the Earth Rangers shared stories on how
plastic pollution is affects them as well as asked questions about plastic
pollution and proposed solutions to the plastic problem.
Plastic Vertical Garden
At this point, Mr. Green then facilitated the training in the upcycling of Plastic bottles to produce Vertical Gardens.
In his training he highlighted some of the benefits of using plastic bottles to produce Vertical Gardens as well as the advantages of vertical gardening. Some key advantages of vertical gardening with plastic bottles include;
- - It maximizes space i.e. we can have a big farm on a very small piece of land or on one of the walls of your house
- - It is cheap since plastic bottles are free
- - It uses very little soil
- - It requires very little water and manure for improved productivity
- - It’s very neat and not labour intensive
- - Weed and pest control are natural and more effective
- - Crop production is more guaranteed, etc.
- - It cleans-up the environment from plastic pollution
He then engaged the Earth Rangers in the production of Plastic Vertical Gardens.
Plastic vertical Gardens produced from the training.
Plastic Umbrella Bucket
Next to the Plastic Vertical Gardens, he also facilitated the training of the Earth Rangers in the production of Plastic Umbrella Buckets. With summer being the rainy season, the Earth Rangers Team thought making umbrella buckets could greatly assists in the solving the problem of water dripping from umbrellas into cars when passengers board Taxis or cars when it rains.
We will demonstrate how these items are used in our next post. It heavily rained on the day of the training and so we couldn't go out to the field and show people how they can use their Plastic Vertical Gardens and Plastic Umbrella Buckets.
Plastic Tree Nursery Pots
Laura and Thanian facilitated a creative expression during which we laughed and relaxed for Louis to proceed with the next training of transforming plastic bottles into nursery pots.
The purpose of the reusable nursery pots training was to end the use of single-use plastic paper nursery pots which are also contributing to the plastic problem in the region.
As simple as cutting a plastic bottle into two halves and perforating it, the Earth Rangers acquired the skill and pledged to produce 20,000 nursery pots and nurse 20,000 trees in the month of August.
For two days, the Earth Rangers acquired skills and are now certified plastic craftsmen who are ready to beat plastic pollution in the North West Region.
Next week, the Earth Rangers shall massively engage in plastic recycling as well as learn about the recycling of plastics to produce pavement tiles, ceiling, ecobricks, plastic kiosks, fences, and lots of creative products from plastic waste.
In less than four Weeks, the Earth Rangers Summer Holiday Program will end and we need your support to purchase the Earth Rangers back to school items such as books, uniforms, pens, pencils etc. to motivate them for their wonderful community service efforts.
Thanks for your support and we shall publish videos of how the different items are used as from Thursday 2nd July 2018.
