Introduction
This is the first part in a series that aims to looks closer at the performance of dApps. I would be looking at numbers like unique user contributions, user retention, interaction (number of comments per post/number of votes), and financial earnings.
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 17 was used to access the data from STEEMSQL ( a publicly managed database by ). Microsoft Excel 2016 was used to plot graphs and charts.
The data used covers a timeframe of February 2018 to September 2018
What is Steemhunt?
Steemhunt is one of the Dapps built on the steem blockchain. If you have ever been in a position where you needed a certain product or software to perform a certain task, then you would appreciate the importance of Steemhunt. Without adequate information, you would pay dearly for your ignorance and you might get stuck in trying to find the solution to a certain challenge.
Steemhunt is a site where hunters display their hunts or catch. They scan or comb through the web in search of cool products. These products range from the latest mobile apps, websites, hardware projects, and tech creations. The pros and cons of the product are listed at the end of the post, other users can also make use of the comments to highlight the pros and cons
After posting the hunt, it is verified by a moderation team to avoid abuse and plagiarism. After verification by the moderation team, the contribution is upvoted and the user earns reards in steem.
POST GROWTH
The first thing that catches your eye when you look at the graph above is what caused the sudden growth in the number of posts from May to June by a whopping 161%? Well I have some of the answers:
- At the end of May 2018, Steemhunt announced Hunt Token Airdrops and bounty rewards for Steemhunt contributors.
- Increased support from @Utopian-io. With increased support from @Utopian-io, there was an incentivized motivation to hunt from hunters. Most activities on the steem blockchain are incentive driven and over time, the price of steem tend to determine the number of activities.
ACTIVE USERS/USER RETENTION
For any application, active user base and user retention is a clear indicator to check progress. Steemhunt user base and contributors have continued to increase but are they retained? In this post, an active user is defined as one who makes at least one post in a month.
Between February and September 2018, there were 32,126 posts made via the Steemhunt app from 2,652 unique authors. This translates into an average of 12 posts per hunter over the peroid under review.
A percentage high of 57.96% of authors has only contributed for a single month from the inception of Steemhunt in February to September 2018. Only 0.45% of authors have made at least one post in each of the last 6 months or more. And only this number can be refered to being retained.
STEEMHUNT POST ENGAGEMENT
Post engagement is when people perform certain actions on a particular post. This activities on Steemhunt can range from commenting, voting and resteeming.
- Post to comments engagement ratio was 6 comments to one post over the last seven months. Comments are also encouraged on Steemhunt. Other users can comment on hunts by other people by listing the pros and cons of a discovered product.
- Post to votes engagement ratio was 41 votes to one post. This is majorly due to the fact that Steemhunt operates a scoring system where the number of votes on a post counts in the final scoring. This causes hunters to be posting their links in WhatsApp and Telegram groups among others and begging for upvotes
- Only 5.4% of posts had 0 comments.
made the highest number of post with 412 posts, closely followed by
who made 324 post and
with 285 posts. The top 20 hunters were responsible for 12.10% of total posts made through the Steemhunt platform.
POST TIMING
This might look irrelevant to a passerby but it can be a topic for debate and research.
- Another observation I discovered while combing through the data is that 46.2% of the posts on Steemhunt are made between 3 pm and 6 pm with post peaking at 3 pm. 25.8% posts were made between 3 pm and 4 pm. I was not able to discover the reason for this, but I can only guess that most posts are made from countries in a particular timezone.
STEEMHUNT EARNINGS
Following trends on Steemit in general points to a direction that people always require a motivation to carrying out engagements on the blockchain. When the price of steem goes high, there is always an increase in activities and the opposite when the price of steem goes down.
- Hunters have earned $73,308.4 between February and September while curators earned $24,614
- 15.77% of posts earned $0.00 and 96.76% of total posts earned between $0 - $10
- Each post earned an average of $3.04
CONCLUSION
If you are looking at discovering cool products, look no further Steemhunt is the way out. I myself have seen products I was never aware of. Products like ZIBCA which converts any water into Hydrogen water in less than 3 minutes. Hydrogen water that can help you to boost your metabolism and immunity among other health benefits. That could save a life!
But personally, I am a bit scared about some products being discovered. Scared in the sense that some could be used for illegal activities. A very good example I encountered was an invincible keylogger for MAC OS, a keylogger in itself is not a wrong discovery but most times it is being used for the wrong reasons.
Every service comes with its pros and cons, so far the pros for Steemhunt far outweigh the cons. It is a service I would recommend for anyone.
