About the project
GitLab is an open source, web-based Git-repository manager providing features such as wiki, issue-tracking and CI/CD pipeline. It has been developed by GitLab Inc, with Dmitriy Zaporozhets and Valery Sizov as software creators and is used by several big companies - IBM, Sony, NASA, CERN, Boeing to name the few.
It evolved from a source code management solution, designed to collaborate on software development, to an integrated solution covering the software development life cycle to begin with and to DevOps life cycle at the end.
It operates according to an open-core development model - core functionality is released under an open source (MIT) license, whereas additional functionality is regulated by a proprietary license.
