We’re up north for a week, staying in an Airbnb in Two Harbors. Took a side trip today up to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The lighthouse there is supposedly the most photographed thing in the state, suck on that big cherry at the Walker Art Center:
We went inside and saw some of the inner workings but for some reason the upper level was closed off.
But when we visited three years ago, it was open all the way up and I was able to take some photos of the 4.5 ton bivalve Fresnel lens there. These pics don’t really do much to give an idea of the scale of the thing:
The building that had the huge fog horns atop it now houses touristy infographics:
The lighthouse was built before Highway 61 (made famous by Bob Dylan) had been constructed so all construction materials and other supplies had to be lifted by cranes 168 feet (51 meters) from the lake below the cliffs.
I took a ton more pics today but the internet connection here is a bit spotty so that’s all for today.
