IP Theft
πππ¦πππ£πππππ½
Many moons ago I was alerted by a fellow DTuber that someone had stolen a bunch of our videos and uploaded it to Dailymotion. On further inspection, I noticed they were being paid for the videos. A number of mine were on there too, so I decided to take some action. I ended up having to threaten Dailymotion with a lawsuit before someone in 'management' emailed me that they had taken the videos down.
They wanted me to "verify my identity" by scanning my passport and sending it to them via email. WHAT?! Not even via a secure messaging app, email! So they basically wanted to add ID theft to my IP theft woes. Of course I declined. Instead I pointed them at all my other "adetorrent" platforms, including my website. I also made a quick video on my phone showing my face and asking for them to take the videos down.
As someone that shows his face in videos, it's more personal when one of my videos get's used without my permission. It's not just the video, it's my identity that's been leveraged.
I got an alert from YouTube that one of my videos had been uploaded by someone else. I had a look and yes, someone had lifted one of my videos wholesale and uploaded it unto their own page. The video had been uploaded about a year ago, and they'd only got 15 views, so I wasn't too upset about it. In this case I decided to do nothing about it. They seemed to have used the video to sell a product on eBay, which is sold now, so that's probably that.
I wish they'd just contacted me and asked for it. I would have allowed it.
Have you ever had your work stolen? How did you feel about it and what did you do?
Peace & Love,
AdeΜ
