Ultracrepidarianism
Presumptuous advising or opining beyond one’s sphere of knowledge.
A cobbler had criticized the way the Greek painter Apelles had rendered a foot in a painting. Apelles’ response, is believed to have been ultra crepidam, the Latin for “beyond the sole.”
An ultracrepidarian is one, like Apelles’ shoemaker, goes “beyond the sole,” by offering advice on a topic that they should not presume to have any competence about.
