West Africa is one of the most interesting places on earth. Especially because of the enormous diversity of cultures that live together here. This diversity originated from the rich tribal history. In the colonial era, Europeans mainly brought their own culture and religion to West Africa, where they mainly wanted to impose their own will and authority on the local population.

Culture and Religion in West Africa
It is difficult to unambiguously describe the culture and religion of West Africa. This is because the African lifestyle has been subject to so many outside influences. Over the centuries, various groups have inhabited the area and have each had an enormous influence on both culture and religion in their immediate environment. The attractiveness of the climate, the mineral resources, and the fertile soil are for a large part the reason why the area also suffered so much from wars and other conflicts between all these groups.
The most common group in West Africa are the black Africans. They are mainly from the Sub-Saharan region (known from the African sand architecture ) and make up the largest part of the population in the various countries. This group is, therefore, the longest of all present in the area. Within this group, there are many different tribes and as a result, there are as many different cultures and religions to distinguish in West Africa. Although there has been some mixing, the various African tribes all have their own forms of religion and culture. This makes it difficult for them to live together with each other until today.

Colonial influences
In the past 500 years, especially colonial times have left their mark on West African culture. In this period, Europeans brought their own culture and religion to West Africa, where they were mainly concerned with imposing their will and authority on the local population. There are big differences in the way this was done and only the transfer of religion has been common. An important goal of European colonization was to convert West Africans to Christianity.
The West African countries, which were colonized by the French, also received French culture alongside Catholicism and French. Other countries were colonized by the British or the Portuguese, and they totally changed their habits. The differences are not only due to the different European cultures but also due to the different ways in which they have colonized them. The British imposed their own values much more powerfully than the French, who have left more of their free spirit and patriotism to West African culture.
Islamic influences
The West African countries have also long been under the influence of Islamic influences from North Africa. In the early years this was mainly driven by trade, but over time more and more Muslims settled in the region itself. In general, the more Northern you come to West Africa, the greater the percentage of the population is Muslim. In countries like Guinea, the northern part of Mali and Senegal, Muslims represent more than half of the population. There are some exceptions because the French generally accepted the presence of Muslims in their colonies more than the other European countries.
