Despite the numerous challenges faced by the internally displaced persons in the IDP camps, some displaced persons have found a home, and they are living a superior life in the camp. I learnt of Lydia (character name) during our visit to St. Theresa's IDP camp in Yola last Thursday where she said her life was better in the camp, and she is much happier there than ever before.
According to the 13-year old, girls her age are married out early in her community to older men. They don't live to go to school, and her case won't have been an exception if she were still in the village. But now that she is the in the camp, she's happy going to school with girls even older than her.
Lydia's ambition is to become a medical doctor, so she could save the lives of the poor children in her community.
There are many Lydias in the IDP camps with great ambitions for their lives, families and the world. IDPcamp2school is one of the tools through which we can reach out to them, and give them direction and support for a better life.
