This post is targeted at bringing out the situation in Benue state Nigeria and an African way of livelihood during this period of Lockdown. Picture story!
There's a little break from Lockdown and people were allowed to go out for their normal market day and due to the fact that I have been indoors for long I also went out though I was wearing my nose mask and making sure nothing and no one came close to me. I couldn't risk anything or take any chances. Corona virus is real.
I walked all through the market. To me it was some form of exercise although it was dangerous I still couldn't miss out on a free day like today. I went to the market just to look at people and how happy they were to trade and find something to feed their families.
I went to different sections of our village market
The vegetable trders
It is dry season but these people find ways to farm vegetables because during this period you hardly find vegetables and that makes the price to go up a little so as to attract gains. Vegetables are hard to come by during this period, people who farm during this period make more money.
Mango market
This period is for mangos and it happens twice a year. Because of Corona virus people who have trees in their homes get to enjoy them. Mangos are not sold in the shops because it get spoilt easily and because of the way things are happening during this period. People who had mangos brought them to the Market to sale and although the patronage was little it was a good site to behold. I managed to bring some home for consumption.
Pepper and Onions
I don't know how safe this really is now but it's fun coming to the market again after a long time. To us it's was an opportunity to have something to eat.
Farm tools and clothes
We have rain now and even though there's Lockdown people get to go to their farms. Over here people feed through thier farm produce and it's been a cultural heritage. Our state is called food basket of the nations but the government has made it quite difficult to claim that title since our state suffer most when it comes to food. The production over the years declined because of pests and lack of agro chemicals to talk care of these farms. This year people are more hungry but sure we will go back to our farm since we had rain last night.
