Freeze-drying is a popular option among backpackers due to its lightweight nature and long storage life. Unlike dehydration, which involves heating food to dispel water and vapors, freeze-drying leaves more of the food's nutrients intact. One of the well-known freeze-dried food brands is Mountain House, which can be easily found in stores like Walmart and Costco. On the other hand, Ready Wise is a rapidly growing company that sells freeze-dried food.
In this review, the authors compare Mountain House and Ready Wise, both of which offer stroganoff and apple crisp options. They also try other meals from both brands like spaghetti with meat sauce and rice and chicken from Mountain House and southwest rice and beans and pasta alfredo from Ready Wise. The authors prepare the food as per the manufacturer's instructions and conduct a taste test. The results show that the Mountain House option is preferred as it requires fewer utensils and the food comes in a contained bag that doesn't slosh around. The ready-wise option, on the other hand, had a weak taste and lacked the desired consistency. The authors conclude that while the bucket that comes with the Ready Wise option is great, the actual food packages are similar to potato chip bags and require an additional container for heating and reconstituting the food.
