Catan is a simple yet engaging game designed for 2 to 4 players that places you in charge of settling and developing a conveniently unpopulated island. The objective of the game is to score the most victory points (with 10 points indicating a win) by building settlements, roads, and armies. The game is played by rolling two dice, which in turn generate resources based on the regions tagged with the rolled numbers. Each player collects resources for each building they have at the intersections of these regions. If a player rolls a seven, they can move the robber, which can lead to discarding of cards and possible loss of resources. Trading, building roads and settlements, upgrading to cities, and buying development cards are also integral parts to the strategic gameplay.
Despite its simplicity, Catan has a depth that has allowed it to hold a special place in the hearts of many players, essentially serving as a gateway to more complex hobby games. The element of trade and negotiation can add an extra layer of complexity, but it can also lead to problems if the social contract at the table is not maintained. The potential for one player to dominate the game after the initial setup in variable setups is another point of contention. Overall, Catan is considered one of the most successful foundation games due to its balance of simplicity and depth, engaging gameplay, and broad appeal.
