In this episode of One Tool Wednesday, Ira presents a fond review of the Estwing Sportsman's Axe which has been his trusted companion for 30 years. This versatile tool has seen him through numerous camping trips, and even proved useful for grinding coffee beans, chopping wood for a stove and carving the handles for other axes. Despite requiring regular reshaping, its soft steel feature making for simple, quick, and effective sharpening proved to be an advantage. However, it’s worth noting it’s not entirely suitable for tasks requiring choking up on the handle.
The Estwing Sportsman's Axe is a perfect balance of weight and size, just about 737 grams and 13.5 inches long respectively. The cutting edge is 3.5 inches wide and the axe head is 5 inches in length which makes it easy and efficient for various tasks. The review shared a critical note on the need for a better sheath design considering the sharp blade. Despite some minor drawbacks, Ira highly recommends this hatchet for its effectiveness and durability, if not for spoon carvers specifically.
