Although it was a little chilly this morning, we managed to get the dogs out for a run along the beach pretty early this morning. It was only 7 deg when we left and down by the water with the wind, it probably was more like 4 deg. But, the sun was shinning and the dogs didn't care if the water was cold, they were going swimming no matter what.
Before we made it down to the beach, we were approached by this fella that was telling us that he found a little bird on the road as he was walking by. It must have gotten hit by a car or something. He put the bird up in a pine tree to get it off the road and see if it would recover and fly away.
wanted to take the bird back to the house with us on our way back if he was still there. We continued on and decided to grab it on the way back to see what we could do to help it out.
enjoyed throwing rocks in the water. He enjoyed it so much he tried to walk in after some of them. Not quite warm enough for that yet.
On our way into the woods for a little hike up the mountain, we spotted a seal checking out what we were doing. He came in pretty close to see what the dogs were up to, but I couldn't get the best shot with my phone.
We headed up the mountain a little bit. We didn't go too far because it was Gibson's first time out since his surgery so I didn't want to push him too hard. We stopped at a little rock clearing for to have a snack and play on the rocks before heading back down.
finished off his adventure with some drawings in the sand before we went back to check on the bird.
We noticed the bird wasn't in the tree any more when we got back to it. It had fallen down in the grass and scooped it up and carried it the short distance back to the house. We examined it a little bit when we got home. It's wing could have been broken but I also noticed it was having a pretty hard time breathing and it was panting a lot; almost gasping to get some air. I thought it might have had some crushed organs but we thought we'd make a little nest in a box and see how it goes.
Unfortunately, before we could even put the bird in the box, it sort of rolled over, fluttered it's wings a little, and died right in 's hands. It must have been pretty messed up internally and just couldn't make it. It's a shame and it would have been cool for
to nurse a little bird back to life it had just been a broken wing, but it is what it is.
Hope you enjoyed our little walk this morning.
