Sold My Webcam
THE IPHONE CLAIMS ANOTHER VICTIM
I sold my webcam today. I used it for a at least four years, having bought it for about £25 on an Amazon lightning deal. It was well used, but also well taken care of, so it kept a nice cosmetic condition. It got some heavy use during the lockdowns, like many other webcams around the world, especially since Apple bundles a really low quality camera with the macs.
The webcam has now joined yet another device replaced by my iPhone. Since apple released the camera share inbuilt in iOS and macOS, many webcams around the world have become redundant. Funny thing is, I was actually looking to upgrade my webcam for a higher quality one, perhaps a 4K one, when I realised I could simply use my iPhone as a webcam without needing to even set it up or physically connect it to my computer.
As long as my iPhone and Mac can communicate with each other via a wireless network, I can use the phone's camera in applications on the mac. So FaceTime, Skype, OBS, YouTube Live, etc, can now be done using the phone as the camera source. Suddenly I have a high quality 4K wireless webcam! For free!
Because it's optimised by Apple, and it's their device and OS, it works flawlessly with no latency. Latency is something I've had to deal with while using other cameras. So, not only does it improve the quality of my streams, it also saves me a lot of time!
The icing on the cake is the fact that I sold the webcam, which I'd bought for 25 quid, for twice that much on eBay 😂. Epic win if you ask me.
Peace & Love,
Adé
