This is my #WednesdayWalk intitiated by #tattoojay.
I visited Ladybower Reservoir recently in my home county of Derbyshire (UK).
In the 1940's the village of Derwent and Ashopton was deliberately submerged under water to make way for the reservoir.
As we've had a hot summer you can now see the hidden villages due to the low water. I last saw the villages in the 80's but can't remember seeing it all. Anyway, I decided to drive up there and have a walk around the reservoir. Unfortunately, a lot of other people had the same thought so it was very difficult to park. After I more or less dumped my car at the side of the road I walked down the banking to the reservoir.
I first saw the old valve house which is still complete. I didn't get too close as it was very muddy. I had read recently that a man had to be pulled out after getting stuck in the mud and had to be rescued by the Mountain Rescue Team!
I then walked through the wood and down the other side of the reservoir. It was quite strange walking on what would have been the bed of the reservoir. After slipping and falling on my backside taking a photograph, I finally got to the ruins without any broken bones!
A lot of what is left of Derwent Hall and the church is just rubble. The hall cellar is still complete but too dark to go down.
It started to get dark so made my way back under the viaduct and through the wood.
Next summer the reservoir will probably be full up. It might be awhile before we see the hidden villages again so glad I paid a visit.
Thank you for stopping by.
