Georgia is one of the states that has been slower than others on making cannabis freedom changes.
They still lock a lot of people up over cannabis and hopefully that is going to change in the coming years, if they move forward with either decriminalization or legalization efforts. They can choose to place their priorities on other activities and use up less resources on growers and users.
In one small region of Georgia, Doravilla which is a small region in DeKalb County, they've recently decided to stop making cannabis arrests. And they aren't the only ones who have made such a change to the rules, trying to ease up on the outdated and unnecessary anti-cannabis policing.
More specifically, they've decriminalized small possession of cannabis.
They've decided to decriminalize small amounts, under one ounce of cannabis. This means that there will be dozens of people, possibly hundreds, who will be kept out of jail as a result. Just in that region alone.
It's a good start, but it isn't enough.
They don't need to legalize it, that isn't the only option, they can also decriminalize and simply choose to ignore it and choose not to ruin someone's life over a plant.
Georgia is just one region that desperately needs cannabis reform.
There are millions of people who suffer in the meantime while the restrictions remain, and people are left with having to choose between visiting their family or staying in a region where they can safely medicate. Giving up their medication to visit loved ones in Georgia might not be an option for them and they shouldn't be forced to make that choice. Too many people are in jail in Georgia, Alabama, and other regions throughout the U.S. where cannabis prohibition remains.
The war on drugs has proven over several decades that it does not work and it is time we change the ignorance we've marched forward with, when it comes to dealing with all things marijuana. Cannabis growers, users, and all those involved in the cannabis industry, should be left alone and not made into criminals over victimless crimes.
