In order to help foster better understand amongst my fellow Stemians, I’ve started a series where you can talk about what certain things mean to you, from your own perspective.
Today the word is one that should mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. It may even mean a lot of different things to each person, depending on their mood.
What does:
Music
Mean to you?
In particular, what is good music?
What is bad music?
Do you like a certain style of genre of music, or is your taste more for a particular decade of music?
For myself, as a child of the sixties, the music that resonates the most with me is that of the seventies and eighties.
It meant a lot to me as a child growing up. It was freedom, inspiration, the stuff of dreams. It was everywhere. Me and my friends would always be singing to each other as we rode our bikes around the neighbourhood, with nothing other than our voices. There were no walkmans back then.
And now, when I play those old songs, I get the soft memories of those times come flooding back.
I don’t seem to get the same connection with most of the new music. To me it seems very formulaic, mass produced. There is little in it to connect me to it. Perhaps it is because I’m no longer a pimple faced teenager.
There are some artists that seem to have that same raw fire and energy of the singers I grew up listening to, and I like their music also. So it’s not all bad.
