India is one of the few countries in the world to be the home of the big cat TIGER. At the beginning of the 20th century India had a huge population of tigers ( about 40,000) But hunting during the British rule and thereafter hunting and poaching caused a rapid decline in the tiger population beginning it down to only 1800 in 1960.
Government of India launched a program called Project tiger in the 1960's.
As a result of this maybe effort, the tiger population is on the increase.
However there is further need to create awareness especially among the villages who live in villages in and around the national parks and tiger reserves.
Due to these efforts India today is home to the largest tiger population of the world.
