Some witnesses have not made a single post about Hive who are still in the top 50. Heck, there are even top 20 witnesses who have not made a post about Hive this year on their witness accounts. Would you believe there is even someone who has not made a post since 2017 that runs a Hive witness? Kind of hard to know what these people have been up to at a glance unless you want to dig through meetings, Gitlab, Discords, or contact them directly if you even can.
You would think with Hive being the social blockchain that it is there would not be a single witness who has not at least made a post about Hive that is currently running a Hive witness. HF25 is around the corner. It’s not like there has not been stuff for them to post about. So those voting for them have a deeper understanding if that witness is representing their interest.
I do understand there is a lot of inactive voters. This is why perhaps witnesses that are still around as we can see by them updating and running their witness should not appear so inactive at face value. Hardfork 25 a year after it lands is going to remove inactive voters. That is going to have some kind of profound impact on the ecosystem.
Going through all your witness votes once in while can be quite a time-consuming task to undertake. I’ve done it a couple of times now and I have even removed witnesses in the past who I want to support but I just don’t know them well enough to make up for the lack of actual posts on their witness account.
You might also notice I don’t vote on the maximum amount of witnesses you can. I simply just don’t have the time to keep track of that many witnesses as irregularly as I do. Even more so when I remove one I take a while to replace them if I ever do. No, I’m not looking for any suggestions either.
Last night I contacted a couple of witnesses. Some are ones I support that have not made a witness post in quite some time asking if they have any plans to. Others I’d like to support but they don’t even put out yearly witness reports.
Final Thoughts
I like to use the excess that a hardfork is coming up to check in on my witness and proposal votes. It can sometimes be easy to forget about doing so as life gets in the way. Not to mention it’s like bookkeeping or housecleaning and most don’t find that sort of activity fun. Dust off those cobwebs and make sure you are voting for what you want to see supported. Don’t make the ecosystem wait till 2022 for dead votes to be removed.
