Happy Women's Day to all the beautiful ladies on Hive!
Although I think of all these days as marketing gimmicks still I like to celebrate this day especially because women are for sure special and most of the time do not get what they deserve. No matter how much our society talk about equality in genders, it seems to be a far-fetched goal even today.
Women's Day is celebrated with a different theme every year and this year's theme is #BreakTheBias. There are thousand of gender biases that we come across every day. Today, let's talk about some of them to celebrate the theme and try to give up on them.
- Woman must respect their husband - One of the most irrelevant biases I have ever come across. We must respect all humans beings as well as animals irrespective of their gender or role in our life.
- Women must take care of the babies and manage the kitchen and household - Women are gifted with a uterus and hence are capable of giving birth to a child while men are not, which is acceptable. But to take care of a child, one needs limbs, heart, brain and time. Why can't men manage it then? Similarly with the kitchen and household.
- A house should run on the income of men - Again, this is insane. A house should run well, no matter where the money id coming from as along as it is all fair and not unjust to anyone.
- Coworker telling you that they are more comfortable working with men - Such comments signal then women are less talented and less likable at work. When I hear of something like this, I strongly push them back on their viewpoint.
- Women are more emotional - There's no science behind this and hence it is totally false. Because of this bias, men don't cry because they think it will make them look weak.
Being a woman and having to listen to and tolerate such bias every day makes me question my gender. And then I have to convince myself all over again that I am strong and these biases cannot put me down in any ways. We need to have a society where women can breathe equally freely and have an equal say. All living beings form an important part of the ecosystem. Each must be respected and given the rights they deserve.
Let's break this bias and appreciate how each one of us contributes to making this world a better place. Happy Women's Day!
