Here is my favorite word for today...i used to hear it a lot when i was a child, not that it mattered much.
forbidden
/fəˈbɪd(ə)n/
What does it mean?
We all know forbidden is the past participle of forbid , but what does it mean ?
-it means not allowed, not permitted according to a rule , law or custom synonym with "banned" , "prohibited", even "illegal"
-we can find it also in physics denoting or involving a transition between two quantum-mechanical states that does not conform to some selection rule, especially for electric dipole radiation (Hi Cheetah!)
Origin
Apparently its first known use was in 13th century and it comes from Middle English forbeden , Old English forbēodan.
I always loved this word...it just has a certain allure to it, as Mark Twain said :
"There is a charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable."
