Midsummer is when we celebrate the summer solstice in Sweden. Actually the summer soltice was on Wednesday but we allways celebrate Midsummer on a Friday. Midsummer is a National Holiday in our country.
Sweden is located very far north. The top of Sweden is in the Artic Circle where the sun doesn´t set att all in the middle of the summer which is why it´s called the land of the midnight sun. I live in Stockholm and we don´t have the midnight sun but it doesn´t get completely dark at night if the weather is clear.
I have posted some pictures of what it looks like at night here. I also posted a picture of the Midsummer Celebration (with people dancing around the Midsummer Pole) and a deer that we saw on the way to the Celebration place! We try to spend time outside today. Everybody hopes for warm weather on Midsummer but it often rains. We Swedes often joke about the failing weather on Midsummer Eve.
After the Midsummer Celebration people usually go back to their homes to celebrate with family or friends. Many of us visit our summer homes. Many women and girls wear flowers in their hair. When we celebrate we drink vodka and eat pickled herring with fresh potatoes. Many people drink alot today, it's an old tradition.
Happy Midsummer!
