Waking with a start. Unaware of my surroundings. It's cold. Really cold. The room is dark. No windows. No door. Where am I? I can hear foot steps outside, people chatting in a language that I do not recognize. Fear is gripping me. Tightening around my throat, cutting off the oxygen. I can't breathe. WAIT! I'm not breathing. With shaking hands, I reach to find a pulse but, I don't find one. There is no pulse. What the hell? Someone with no pulse should be dead. Am I dead? Is this what life is like after death? Am I in hell? Get a grip Veronica, you are not dead. Your probably dreaming. Think of what you did yesterday. Yesterday, which feels like a life time ago. I woke early, tended to the chores, watched father work in the field, worked with Mother to mend the laundry, cooked, cleaned, the usual. But, last night, last night, was not usual at all. Mother and Father were acting differently. Almost afraid. Yes, something was wrong for certain.
Bolting out of bed, rushing to the window, seeing the bright sun on a frosty morning, the nightmare it was so real. It was real. It was me a thousand years ago. The night that changed everything forever. The night when all the secrets and lies caught up with my family and destroyed the only good thing I ever had. Now, I walk this world alone, tired, I can smell death everywhere I go. This world reeks of it. How can these humans live in such filth?
My family was charged with dark magic and I punished to live eternity as a vampire empress, ruler of war. I've done things that would shake you to your core and other things you never would imagine. I try not to dwell on the past or think too much of the future. After all, once you're a vampire time really does stand still. There is no future, days blur together, everything seems meaningless, everything except your need for this one thing that controls you. BLOOD! My throat is on fire. It has been weeks since I properly fed. I try to deny myself that little pleasure of sinking my teeth into something but, today after that god forsaken nightmare to hell with rules. I need something to sink my teeth into, something to make me forget everything that has happened in the past millennium.
Creeping through the house, I find myself in the midst of Portland. It's raining again. Great! There is nothing like rain on a dreary day to make it all the better. What happened to that sun? It abandoned me, as well. Searching the streets, no one is near. I bolt forward with all my strength. I can smell what I'm after. It is far but, I can smell it. A bear, just coming out of hibernation. Ripe for the taking. The further I run the smaller Portland becomes to my back. The ground begins to shake. It is turning and twisting under my feet. Earthquake? No! This is something else. It is moving to my feet. This is not right. I do not have that kind of power. Shaking it from my mind, I find that grizzly and attack at full speed. Damn! It didn't know what hit it until it was too late. Draining every ounce from it, something doesn't feel right. Then, I see it.
A tornado sweeping up the mountain headed straight to the cave. What the hell?
