"When, tell me Ryan?" Lucy said through gritted teeth as she dug her dagger into the front dashboard.
"Soon Luc, two maybe three days" replied Ryan calmly "now try and relax"
"Not that stupid, when are you going to let me stick this into something living, one of them" Lucy was growing impatient.
"Just relax kid and stop stabbing there, you really won't like it when the air bag flings open and knocks you for six" he laughed to himself.
Lucy turned to him face screwed up and tongue sticking out.
Ryan just laughed and drove on.
They had been together for a couple of years now. Lucy was an orphan, she had been living with a nomadic band of thieves and misfits in the north (the Automans rarely ventured there) and Ryan was a soldier for the Automans, exiled for misconduct, or at least that's the story he tells anyway. Lucy always thought there was more to his story but didn't want to push too hard, she sensed how uneasy he became when they talked about the past. The past was a dark place for both of them and as much as Ryan had saved Lucy, she had saved him too. Fate had brought them together, now nothing could tare them apart. Ryan pulled in onto the hard shoulder and got out, leaving Lucy asleep. He reached over his shoulder and grabbed his binoculars. There was a town up ahead about three miles, he scanned the perimeter, it had been fortified at some point but there were no signs of life now.
"Thank Javeva, have you found something, finally?" Lucy quipped, suddenly wide awake.
"Yes, so strap up kid this could be your chance to test that blade of yours" Ryan replied, laughing.
"Haha Ryan, I'm not cooking again" she said spinning the blade around in her hand, waving her arms in karate type movements.
They jumped back in the car both rejuvenated at the thought of food and perhaps a fight.
