Paragraphs are the building blocks or stepping stones of your paper.They lead the reader through the writing, this helps provide clarity that is needed for understand your ideas.
Many people are often mistaken by defined paragraphs by their length. However, paragraphs should be defined by a specific idea or topic. A paragraph is focused on a single topic, idea, or point.
A paragraph should only be as long as it needs to be, even if it is only one line.
In each paragraph you should have the following:
Topic Sentence
This is where you state the main idea of the whole paragraph in once sentence. You could even have a concluding sentence for the topic of that paragraph, at the end of the paragraph.
Support
Explain terminology, include some facts, quotes and examples. Make sure this has a clear link to your topic.
A Wrap-up Sentence
Have a short conclusion for your paragraph, no one likes to get left hanging.
If you feel it is to short, here are a few things you can do:
- Join two paragraphs
- Give additional support or development
- Define any essential terms
- Include a quotation
- Get rid of the paragraph
