As a wannabe writer and tech enthusiast, I recently purchased Scrivener - a software package that aims to help authors organize their work. I read many reviews and watched lots of You-tube videos about it, so I took the plunge.
What is Scrivener?
Although you could think of Scrivener as a word processor, it is so much more. You can outline your story, write notes, add research and meta data, character and location sheets to refer back to. Each chapter is kept as a separate folder, inside which you write your scenes. All elements of your story can be shuffled around easily.
Why did I buy it?
I am currently writing a fantasy story in collaboration with and
. The realm of Emerus has to be consistent in all of our separate parts. The business of world building is new to me so thought this software would be ideal for me to keep all the characters, wildlife, creature design and locations organized and indexed for easy retrieval.
What do I think of Scrivener?
Up until now I have used Word for writing. Although it’s great as a word processor, I could imagine it becoming unwieldy once the story grows past several thousand words and hundreds of pages. Scrivener keeps all of my notes, references, and research all in one place, easily searchable. Yes, there is a bit of a steep learning curve when it comes to Scrivener, but that’s what You-tube is for. To get started with the basics doesn’t take very long. I experimented earlier with importing the four chapters of my Virtual Mortality story and compiling them into an e-book. This worked flawlessly. I then compiled the manuscript into a Kindle book, and this too worked fine. It can compile into PDF, doc, txt, HTML, print and many other formats - so basically you write once, and compile it into a variety of formats at the click of a button. I can see why so many writers love using Scrivener.
Will it make me a better writer?
Definitely not, but I will be a better organized one.
