On our to-do list for the weekend was a visit to the Library. We have a super awesome library system in Duluth and my kids look forward to every trip.
So I checked online to find out what time they open today and we hopped on the bus this morning, kids all excited and happy.
But when we got there, we saw this sign.
Now, this is a disappointing turn of events that my children will get over. This is a first world problem that isn't really all that big of a deal in our lives.
But, there is an entire population that will suffer this winter because the Library has decided to close their doors on Sundays. Can you guess who that population are?
They are a population I knew little to nothing about until we encountered our own #homelessexperience.
Our winters get down below -40° F, and the Library is a safe and calm space for people to go during the daytime when temhe overnight shelters are closed.
That option has been taken from them, they were open every day of the week last year.
I always thought it was a very inclusive space. They have a gardener club, a teen club for manga and anime enthusiasts and last year I did not hear of one homeless person being harassed there.
It's been an inspiring space, with kind people and knowledgeable staff, with events for children and adults alike.
But this move on their part, while the city is trying to push through a huge purchase of riot gear for the Police Department is uncalled for, and disappointing.
I so rarely have free-time these days, but I will make sure my voice is heard. Somebody needs to speak up on behalf of the people this will hurt.
Keep Steeming you guys. Love to you.
