If you use plover, the open source program started by Mirabai Knight, steno isn't just for typing faster. An additional benefit is that it is a general computer interface that can type anything, this makes it useful for additional things like, if you for instance started programming in APL, the weird language that uses a lot of strange symbols not normally found on a keyboard.
Such as ⊃ ∨ ·⊂π∉ well you get the point, these are not normally on a computer keyboard, but in steno you can type them more easily. Also it is very useful to types emojis, though you might have to add these to your dictionary.
I decided it would be useful to have ₿ so I decided to add it to my dictionary.
Even though I still very much learning steno, so I generally do not use it for typing, but even know it can be very useful to input emojis.
