"A Shoebox House", is the title of my memoir about my life with online dating in 2017. Follow my post for excerpts as I create my rough draft. I changed a few names and locations to protect privacy, but all of the circumstances in my story are true, no embellishments. Anyone interested in learning about the phenomenon of "Ghosting" - this book is for YOU!
"I had become fond of Luke's persona and we continued to chat every day. It was nearing the end of March; I felt warm sensations in response to his banter and I wanted to know more about this friendly, mysterious, and cool dude. At one point, I asked him to send me an immediate selfie (I meant immediately) so I would know he was a real person. Per my request, I received the image at the speed of light, and although he didn't look much like his profile picture, I recognized his smile.
Upon my comment to him of the obvious photo differences, Luke admitted that this profile picture was from last year. In his selfie, he wore a squat baseball cap which hid his hair and sported a gray hooded sweatshirt with the frayed and twisted strings hanging loose. It looked like his right lower lip was the proud owner of a wad of chewing tobacco, but I attributed it to bad selfie skills because he claimed to be inherently against tobacco consumption. His dark sunglasses, with rose-tinted lenses, kept one eye hidden from my view.
There were patches of snow speckled with dirt in the scenic background, and the snow was melting; an inevitable symbol of spring in Montana. Luke was outside in the frosty air and the sun was shining brightly, a multitude of trees and shrubs showed their presence behind him; he appeared to be at a park. I could almost hear the "quack" of the ducks floating peacefully in the lucid pond behind him. I wondered if he rode his bike - that undertaking would have been unpleasant to me and brisker than I preferred. I was somewhat puzzled about his transportation situation, but I was satisfied he was a tangible person."
