Here is my submission for the February 1, 2020 #99wordstory. It's been a really long time since I've actually written a story but I'd like to get back into it. Hope you enjoy!
Fissile
Marla knew it would be nearly impossible get to higher ground where the fissile ground ended and the bedrock and granite could withstand the constant earthquakes. She tried not to think about the liquefaction that swallowed whole neighborhoods, leaving nothing but surviving chimneys popping up from the ground.
Thinking about her family being swallowed by the ground would only paralyze her with grief. Giving up felt like the easy choice but her will to live superseded her anguish. The earth stilled. Now was her chance to sprint for the hills.
