Most reasonable people would agree that making fun of people for things they cannot control, is shitty and mean. But if, as Pietro Aretin said, “A single satire will sometimes effect more good than a hundred sermons,” is it not OK to sometimes make fun of people for negative qualities they CAN control. If a person is told for 100 consecutive days that the hat they wear is ugly, they will either stop wearing the hat, or become so resolute in their own personal style that the hat will become a part of their being. By that same logic, if you make fun of a person for being fat, the same could be true. They might either decide to take steps to change their situation or become so resolved to their lot, that they are hardened into a stronger person (and even become a famous comedian.)
Or is their blood on your hands if they kill themselves?
So, is it good to shame people for the things they can control? Should you just mind your own business as the standards around you drop? Where is the line?
