Recently a DEADSPIN article came out with an extremely well edited video showing dozens of local news networks across the nation clearly reading of a script preaching about the dangers of online media sources and the supposed epidemic of “fake news.” The ending, and oft repeated message of these “talks” was that “it was a danger to our democracy.” The irony being that when cut together, the phrase, “this is dangerous to our democracy” seems to apply to the video itself. But how does the right feel about this revelation? Obviously the concern about “fake news” is real and plenty of people are “wary” to it’s influence. But where do you draw the line, when your main source of news seems to argue that EVERY other media source is fake? Can they be trusted?
Is it even ethical for them to have such an obvious agenda? Or, since they are a private company is it perfectly within their right to push whatever message they want out on the platform that then not only own, but control?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
