Ice skating is an Olympic sport since 1908 and in 1924 was included in the first Winter Olympics held in Paris, Chamonix (France). To participate in the championships, it is necessary to be a member of the International Skating Federation. Each skater represents the country in which it is federated, so it is possible to see Russian skaters representing Germany, for example. The number of skaters, which a federation can send to a World Cup, depends on the ranking obtained the previous year. If a discipline has more than 36 registered, the qualifying rounds are made before the championship.
