We Have to Form Correct and Understandable Sentences
Mostly non-native speakers want to able write in English language as good as a native speaker. Yes, this is our dream to be master writing in English language! Can we as non-native speaker achieve this dream? Honestly, we are as a non-native speaker who lives in a country which is English not as the main language will have difficulty to achieve this dream (I think almost impossible).
Firstly when I decided to learn and improve seriously writing in English language, I talked to myself in my mind, "Hey.... you could writing in English language as good as native speaker!". Ha...ha.. ! Six months later, I aware and admit that to write as good as native speaker is almost impossible for me because I have limited access and resources. I live in the country that English language is not my main language, and I talk to myself do not compare with people who lives in country where English language is their main language such as Philippines, Singapore, New Zealand etc.
Do not put a high standard for our English language skill, just aware we only need able to write in simple English words or sentences. David Hill a writer for young reader from New Zealand said to beginner writer not too much use difficult words, just use simple words or words can understandable by your reader. Too much using difficult words to describe our intent or mean will give an impression to our reader that we are too "show off". He said mostly the reader like to read simple words or sentences even adult reader love it.
Then I found this sentences on internet, this sentences come from a German who teaching English. These are sentences :
"We do not have to become great English writers or produce art and entertainment. We have to form correct and understandable sentences ....."
Can We As a Non-native Speaker Become a Good English Writer?
Yes, we can ! I ever saw video at coursera.org that the instructor made interviews with non-native speaker who become international writer and author such as Victoria Azaro (now live in New Zealand), she comes from Argentina and has traveled to many countries with her husband then write her experience and Latin culture in her books. Also there are many writer like her around world.
We just to write simple words and sentences in correct also understandable. Do not be afraid to make mistake when we write in English language, keep trying until you can write easily in correct way and easy to read. Just one advice for us, English language has a specify character, that is all about tenses. Try to learn about tenses and then you can write in good narrative.
Do not be "Baper" ! (Bawa Perasaan)
Yes, do not be "Baper" ! Baper is slang word in my own language (Indonesia) which is meant do not too emotion when you face a simple problem, or do not easy to be offended by other people. Sometimes there is a native speaker give negative respond about our writing or the way we write, remember it we are in learning proggress so do not "Baper!". It is amazing for ourself as non-native speaker but still want to learn writing in English language because in the future we will become "a bilingual person". The show must go on!
